Stoneware; height 13, diameter 9 ยฝ inches. Bequest of Mrs. E. H. Johnson. In 1785 Captain John Norton traveled to Bennington with his small family from Williamstown, Massachusetts. Vermont was still petitioning for statehood at the time, and, as a result, was effectively an independent republic.

This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44). This beauty sports a Small Size, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt.

Early Circa 1800's nice Crock Jug Almost Ovoid in Design with a brown Finish. Stamped E& LP Norton Bennington Vt. 9 1/2 Inches tall most likely a one gallon capacity. a couple of small flakes around the spout are the only real defects on this early piece of American Crockware.
